NEW YORK CITY, 1984


Bowie started to write a rock opera based on George Orwell's 1984, a novel about the horrors of a totalitarian future where all people are watched by Big Brother. Orwell's estate refused the rights to the work to Bowie (my, that sounds familiar!) and Bowie instead turned the material into the album Diamond Dogs.
