Freda Payne's ‘Band of Gold.’

INT. SOMBRERO CLUB – LONDON – NIGHT – 1971

A Drag Singer lip-syncs with the song, on a small club stage draped in silver spangles.

Freda Payne

Freda Payne's hit Band of Gold was on the charts in 1970 for twenty weeks. Apparently a song about a honeymoon gone bad, at first she did not want to sing the song, saying it was about a frigid woman. On further examination the lyrics put the man at fault. A song about male impotence or perhaps, a man who really wasn't interested in having sex with a woman. Having it sung by a drag queen only adds another layer of intrigue to the drama!

We are already at a point where an appeal to rock 'n' roll will tell us almost nothing worth knowing, though this is, finally, a rock 'n' roll story. Real mysteries cannot be solved, but they can be turned into better mysteries.
