Of course the real life people that Brian and Curt are based on are Bowie and Iggy, not Bowie and Jagger. So what do they have to say about the idea that they had a fling back in the day. They both used to seem pissed off about being asked but now they seem bored by the question.

A decade ago Bowie suggested, About 15 or 16 years ago, I really got pretty tired of fending off questions about what I used to do with my [penis] in the early seventies. My suggestion for people with prurient interests is to go through the 30 or 40 bios on me and pick out the rumour of their choice. In a 1999 Uncut magazine interview Bowie was more philosophically resigned. And what he said may be what the film Velvet Goldmine is all about, I guess I am what the greatest number of people think I am. I have no control over that at all.

Iggy Pop was the subject of Q magazine's October '99 Cash for Questions feature in which readers are invited to submit questions. One inquired bluntly, "Did you ever fuck Bowie?" And Iggy replied, "I knew we were going to get that question. But I didn't think it was going to be put with so little wit. (Firmly) No; nor he I."

Iggy was a lot funnier and revealing in his answer to the question asked by Barney Hoskyns in Mojo magazine, "How did you feel seeing yourself in bed with David Bowie in Velvet Goldmine?"

★"Dude, I have not seen the film. I'm a hard sell when it comes to cultural product. I saw a trailer for the movie and I thought Ewan looked a little too porky to play me. It didn't seem that compelling to me. I can give you no comment about the scene in question. I have no comment or opinion on what people say about the things I've done - my blood, my heroin, my dick, my pussy if I had a pussy, my mouth, my butthole... I've absolutely nothing to add!"★

Proof that the rumor has spread to the canon of Rock and Roll gossip is the way Q magazine feels free to be cheeky about it. A blurb on a picture of Iggy for the Cash for Questions quotes him as saying about the interview, "Oh I get it. It will be, We wanna know about David Bowie's pee-pee."
Bowie and Lou Reed circa 90s And for the Bowie version of Cash for Questions, there is this photo of Bowie and Lou Reed, with the blurb, "David: "...And then we both shagged Iggy!" Lou: "Er..."

We are already at a point where an appeal to rock 'n' roll will tell us almost nothing worth knowing, though this is, finally, a rock 'n' roll story. Real mysteries cannot be solved, but they can be turned into better mysteries.
