Dialogue - Lyrics
Mar. 4th, 2005 03:08 amscript:
CLOSE ON Curt’s lips, whispering through the cascade:
Make a wish -
A WIDE SHOT of the roof, now awash in stardust, as the white bodies of Curt and Arthur are seen through the sparkles; Curt behind Arthur, gently fucking. A long, slow CRANE OUT begins, as music and voices peak.
And see yourself, on-stage, inside-out! A tangle of garlands in your hair. Of course you are pleasantly surprised.
TEEN ARTHUR
(voice-over)
Softly, he said...
ALL THREE VOICES
(whispering)
I will mangle your mind.
Mmm, wonder what Arthur wished for...
What beautiful dialogue! It's so dreamlike because the meaning has that symbolic aspect that we find in dreams. So I hope you'll excuse me as I get a little Siggy on you. Curt's words show Arthur just how simple it is to reinvent/find yourself - you can be the star of your own life (echoes of David Copperfield's "Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life") by getting up on the stage (being visible, declaring yourself a star) and seeing yourself inside out (revealing your inner self, oh gosh, my geesh, by coming out of the closet even) Wearing a tangle of garlands in your hair is accepting both the (effeminate) adornment - flowers in your hair!- as well as the honors of a hero. And in forming an identity one integrates both the masculine and feminine elements in the personality, (true for gay and straight people). "Of course you are pleasantly surprised," is the classic reaction one has in dreams to mysteries becoming crystal clear.
"I will mangle your mind" is just so fascinating here as it indicates that, despite what Curt and Arthur are doing at this moment in the film, sex itself is not the liberating force in gay identity, rather awareness is. Self actualization occurs from the freedom (self acceptance) one allows oneself. Teenage Arthur, Adult Arthur and Curt say the line together, integrating the aspects of the self (id, super ego, ego).
The line is one of the lyrics to the song Sebastian, "Love me sublime, mangle my mind."
I'm going to have a cigar and a few lines now ...
