I've noticed LOTS of Brian/Elvis moments so far. Is this just because the path to stardom must leave a trail of broken hearts? Or do we just prefer that particular narrative?

Anyway, I won't go so far as to say that the makers of "Elvis" took some cues from VG, but there were an awful lot of images that were similar, such as the first time Elvis is on TV we see him on the viewscreen, and Parker's hyperbolic insistance that he could make Elvis a star. Jonathan's face during this bit was Brian all over, but this time with some dialog back, rather than just the calculating look.

There were others, however I admit that I am by now so familiar with all of JRM's typical gestures (particularly the way he uses his eyes and hands) that I may be reaching for some connection that's only there in my fevered little brain. For example, when he gazes longingly into the window of Sun Records and we see his reflection in the glass, I found myself wondering what Josh Minnell was doing in Memphis.

All My Johnnys

Those are fabulous observations! I love that Johnny was able to play both a real and fictional rock star.

such as the first time Elvis is on TV we see him on the viewscreen,

Yes, that shot was nearly identical!

Since we know Johnny so well, it was hard to suspend disbelief and see him as Elvis but for the most part, it worked for me. He did excellent small things like hold his hands differently than for other roles - he knew the way Elvis wore a watch or bracelet and had his hand on his guitar. That showed that he studied the details to reinforce the illusion but fortunately, it wasn't merely a parody, like so many Elvis performances.

We are already at a point where an appeal to rock 'n' roll will tell us almost nothing worth knowing, though this is, finally, a rock 'n' roll story. Real mysteries cannot be solved, but they can be turned into better mysteries.
